Heath's new role
By Sydney Confidential's CHRIS BARRETT
May 06, 2006
HEATH Ledger is reportedly set to play a young Bob Dylan in a new biopic on
the legendary singer-songwriter.
The Aussie actor, 27, will join a stellar cast including compatriot Cate
Blanchett, Richard Gere, Christian Bale and Julianne Moore.
Ledger, who missed the Sydney premiere of his new film Candy earlier this
week, will be one of six actors including Gere and Bale playing Dylan
throughout his life in I'm Not There.
Irish heartthrob Colin Farrell was tipped to play the folk icon in the early
stages of his career but has been dumped for Ledger by director Todd Haynes
at the last minute.
The film is expected to start shooting next month.
Ledger's involvement signals a quick reversal of his vow to step back from
acting and let actor fiancee Michelle Williams be the breadwinner for their
five-month-old daughter Matilda.
"I'm going to try not to work at all this year and send Michelle out to
bring in the cash," he said in February.
"I'll be Mr Mum. It's something very important to me."
The Dylan film follows hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed Johnny
Cash biopic Walk The Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon,
which was nominated for five Oscars and earned Witherspoon the Best Actress
statuette.
More than a dozen Dylan classics will be performed by acts such as the White
Stripes and Aimee Mann in the movie.

It's a very old-fashioned name; my grandmother was named Matilda. Some
folks are going back to old traditional names. It's hard to believe for
some folks, but at one time "Bertha" was a very popular name and
considered to be very pretty.
If you read older books, you will see that "unusual" names were not all
that uncommon even 100 years ago. Children of both sexes were given
Biblical names, including boys who were given ones like Hezekiah,
Adirondam, etc. And we've all read about the Puritans who named their
children Thankful and Patience and Godspeed. It's whatever fashionable

Henry II Plantagenet's mother was called Matilda. I always thought it was a Medieval
name...
What crap...I've known many people named Moses.
And I adore the name Apple. Some people just like unique names. I was
going to name my daugher, Rhiannon or Fresa...I ended up with a much
more common name but those two names were front runners for a time.

Attack a damper on Ledger visit
By Christine Sams
April 3, 2006
Heath Ledger is reconsidering plans to visit Australia for the release of
his film Candy because of the treatment he received from paparazzi last time
he was here.
The Oscar-nominated actor was initially keen to return to Sydney to promote
the film later this month but he is having second thoughts about returning
home.
"A few things have come up," said a spokesman for Dendy films, the
distributor of Candy, when asked about Ledger's plans for a visit home.
"He's juggling to see what he can do.
"It's still up in the air as to when or if it will happen," the spokesman
said.
Ledger told S earlier in the year he was definitely planning to return to
Australia because he was keen to promote Candy, directed by Neil Armfield
and also starring Abbie Cornish.
"I'm going to come back out there in April to do some press for Candy - it's
a good film too, I'm proud of it," he said.
But sources close to the star say he was so angered by his treatment by some
Sydney paparazzi - when he and partner Michelle Williams were sprayed with
water pistols at a red-carpet event - that it will be a long time before he
returns.
Williams, who has a baby, Matilda, with Ledger, was said to be particularly
distressed about the incident.
After the spray attack, Ledger listed his Bronte home for sale, telling
close friends he would be relocating overseas permanently.
While Dendy executives are valiantly pursuing their negotiations with
Ledger, at this stage it appears Cornish will be the most likely person to
turn up for the red-carpet event.
Cornish, who is preparing to film Elizabeth: The Golden Age (the sequel to
Elizabeth) overseas opposite Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush, has signalled
her intention to return to Australia for a whirlwind promotional trip.
Candy is due for general release in Australia on May 25.

Absolutely agree with your fashion analysis. Michelle Williams always
looks like she borrowed a dress from
someone else. The clothes wear her as she is a dowdy mouse. Reese
Witherspoon was in her grandma's dress,
she used to be so chic, now matronly. Sad for such a pretty woman.
Charliese Theron was beautiful, but that bow
was overpowering even for her tall frame. Uma Therman did seem the
best looking woman last night, as did Salma Hayak and Jada Smith.
Kiera Knightly while striking had on her mother's necklace -- too old
for her face.
Best looking man hands down was George Clooney and thank god, Philip
Seymour Hoffman shaved and tucked in his shirt.
The hip-hop crew needed to park their grill look, IMHO. I'm not a hop
fan nor their style, but the energy was infectious.
Saddest boobs was Felicity Huffman but her husband, Bill Macy was sure
her best accessory and so proud. Good for them.
Reese Witherspoons's husband, Ryan Phillippe had the most pained
expression while she gave her speech. He looked fearful she would
forget to thank him.
Why does the place go crazy over Jack Nicolson? I don't get it. And
Spielberg never seems to have any sense of humor about himself.

Evidently she didn't get the memo. Saw only a few in jewel tones
-Salma Hayak and Jada Pinkett Smith come to mind and Meryl Streep
looked great in purple. Thought Reese Witherspoon looked pleasant, if a
bit matronly (Sandra Dee would have been right at home in that number),
but at least she looked healthy...Felicity Huffman looked positively
anorexic ...her droopy little middle-aged boobs and boney chest looked
shockingly awful in that plunging black number. Charleize
Theron...gorgeous Dior gown utterly spoiled by a godawful monstrous 2
foot bow on her shoulder. Actually thought some of the best looking
gowns were on people's wives. Not a great fashion year.

I like this kind of stuff (and *love* the Oscars), hope it's okay to post
here seeing as it's not really gossip.

Academy Awards 2006 trivia
PICS: Brokeback Mountain leads an open race for the Oscars
Dame Judi Dench'>Judi Dench is nominated for Mrs Henderson Presents
Steven Spielberg is one of the most successful Oscars producers
The Academy Awards will be handed out in Hollywood on 5 March.
Now in its 78th year, the ceremony has long fascinated movie fans
with its mix of glamour, suspense and surprise.
Here are some of snippets of trivia about this year's event:
Brokeback Mountain leads the nominations with eight. It is the most
open Oscars race since 2000, the last time a film topped the list with
eight nominations (American Beauty). The leading films in subsequent
years have received between 11-13 nominations each.
It is a good year for Oscars newcomers - 14 of the 20 acting nominees
have not been nominated before, the highest number for nine years.
The remaining six have 13 previous nominations and four awards
between them.
It is a good year for low-budget films - only one of the best picture
nominees had a budget over $15m (£8.6m), according to the Internet
Movie Database. Munich is the most expensive, with a reported $75m
(£43m) budget.
Among the best picture nominees, Crash led the US box office takings
at the time of the nominations with $55m (£32m), followed by Brokeback
Mountain's $42m (£24m).
For the first time in 25 years, all five nominees for best picture have also
been nominated for best director - only the fourth time in Oscars history
that the shortlists have been the same.
At 71, Dame Judi Dench'>Judi Dench is the oldest best actress nominee since 80-year-old
Jessica Tandy won for Driving Miss Daisy in 1990. Dame Judi is nominated
for her role in Mrs Henderson Presents.
Keira Knightley, 20, who is shortlisted for Pride and Prejudice, would be the
youngest best actress winner if she won. The current record is held by
Marlee Matlin, who won for Children of a Lesser God in 1987, aged 21.
If Heath Ledger wins best actor for Brokeback Mountain, the 26-year-old
would be the youngest winner of the award. Adrien Brody, who was 29
when he won for The Pianist in 2003, currently holds the record.
Ledger's girlfriend Michelle Williams is nominated for best supporting actress.
The pair met while filming Brokeback Mountain and had a daughter in October.
George Clooney is the first person to be nominated for acting in and directing
different films in the same year. He is up for best supporting actor for his
role in Syriana, plus best director and best original screenplay for Good Night,
and Good Luck.
Clooney is only the fifth person to be nominated for acting, directing and
writing in the same year - following Orson Welles (1942), Woody Allen (1978),
Warren Beatty (1979 and 1982) and Roberto Benigni (1999).
With Munich, Steven Spielberg has produced a total of five films with best
picture nominations - one behind record-holder Stanley Kramer and tied
with Francis Ford Coppola. He has also been nominated for best director
six times.
Woody Allen has received his 21st career nomination for best original
screenplay for Match Point. He has received more screenplay nominations
than any other writer in Oscars history with 14. He has also been nominated
for best director six times and best actor once, winning a total of three times.
Composer John Williams has two nominations for best original score for
writing music for Munich and Memoirs of a Geisha. It takes his career
nominations tally to 40 - one behind best score record-holder Alfred
Newman. Williams has won five times.

I wonder if Michelle would have been disowned if she had appeared in a film
like The Godfather?
It seems like these Christian groups don't have problem with killing in a
film (and killing made the Top 10), but have a lot of issues when love is

The exclusive Christian high school Michelle Williams attended has
bitterly disowned the Oscar-nominated star of "Brokeback Mountain" -
saying it's deeply offended she appeared in the controversial
gay-cowboy flick. "We don't want to have anything to do with her in
relation to that movie," Jim Hopson, headmaster of the posh Santa Fe
Christian School, told the San Diego Union Tribune. "Michelle doesn't
represent the values of this institution . . . 'Brokeback Mountain'
basically promotes a lifestyle we don't promote."

It's kissing another human being. So what?

HEATH LEDGER has found himself in a curious position.
His work in Brokeback Mountain, which opened at Fox Studios last night, has
catapulted him to Oscars contention. But from the audience's point of view,
Ledger's performance as a cowboy tortured by his secret love for another man
has materialised from nothing.
Wasn't Ledger the scrappy guy in the armour in A Knight's Tale? The
lightweight in the teen flick 10 Things I Hate About You?
Ledger, in Sydney for the film's opening, is well aware of the perception.
"I did my first movie in Hollywood when I was 18 and, not having gone to
drama school and not having an acting coach, I've been forced into making my
mistakes on film," the 26-year-old said yesterday.
"People are like, suddenly you can perform and it's like, not - it's not
f---ing sudden. I've been happily making mistakes and discovering things
myself. I didn't come into this industry at the age of 35 having done 50
plays . "
Although he mumbles, Ledger radiates a polite maturity and exudes a restless
energy. Perhaps it's fatherhood. He is in Sydney with his girlfriend, the
actor Michelle Williams, and their baby, Matilda Rose, almost three months
old.
He met Williams during the arduous filming of Brokeback Mountain, which is
set in Wyoming but was shot in Canada. Williams plays Ledger's wife, who
discovers her husband has a gay lover.
At the heart of the film is the characters' inability to express their
feelings, which seems to fit with Hollywood's approach to gay love affairs:
until now mainstream cinema has tiptoed around the issue.
Ledger had heard about the before he read it.
"Initially when the was handed to me there were manufactured fears
and anxiety and risk kind of stapled to it," he said.
"That initially bled into my first response. But it dissipated. I realised
they weren't my fears."
Although Ledger was approached to portray the more candid Jack Twist (a role
that went to Jake Gyllenhaal), he found he responded to the painfully
inexpressive Ennis del Mar.
"I think I was attracted to how physical this portrayal was going to have to
be because he had so few words," Ledger said.
"I wanted him to be a clenched fist. I wanted his mouth to be a clenched
fist. And I wanted the words to fight the way out of his mouth."
Acting the gay love scenes was confronting: "It is difficult, but it's
kissing a human being, so f---ing what?" Ledger said. "Once you get the
first take done, well - the mystery's out the window; let's get on with it."
Paparazzi shoot water pistols at Ledger
AAP reports: Five paparazzi photographers whom Heath Ledger allegedly spat
at have retaliated at the Sydney premiere of his new movie - shooting the
actor with water pistols.
As Ledger arrived with partner Michelle Williams at Cinema Paris at Fox
Studios on Friday night, the photographers took aim at the Hollywood
heart-throb with the toys.
They hit him in the face and chest, wetting his hair and clothing, in an
action taking some 10 seconds.
Ledger put his hands up to protect himself and tried to shield his partner,
who was also hit by the water, as they moved quickly inside the cinema
complex.
Upon seeing the incident, security guards moved towards the paparazzi but
the five had left the scene.
Veteran paparazzi photographer Peter Carrette, who was not (not) involved in
the incident, told AAP: "Enough is enough.
"Some boys thought they would get him back for spitting at them. It's
(spitting) totally out of order.
"I came here to do my job but if anyone spat at me I would deck them.
"We are just doing our job. He gets $250,000 a picture (a movie) and we get
$250 a picture. Who the hell does he think he is?"
Last week, Ledger said he was hurt and embarrassed by claims he had spat at
journalists on the Sydney set of the movie Candy last year and by a recent
report that said his uncle spat in a photographer's face.
"It's disgusting and awful. I would never in a million years do anything
like that," Ledger told News Ltd newspapers. "I'm not some sort of dirty
spitter."
To tonight's premiere, Ledger wore a hooded jumper under a black suit
jacket, his outfit completed with sunglasses and sneakers, while Williams
wore a navy Chanel dress.

Beyonce considers marriage
12/01/2006 - 08:14:03
Beyonce Knowles is getting closer to marrying longtime boyfriend JAY-Z,
after confessing that her sister Solange has made her think seriously about
turning her back on single life.
The former Destiny's Child star tells the new US issue of Cosmopolitan that
she has become a big fan of marriage after watching how happy her
19-year-old sister is since exchanging vows and starting a family.
She says: "I don't know when I'll want to get married. I never pictured
myself as a bride, but, after my sister's wedding, I did start thinking
about what kind of wedding I'd want. I don't think I want a big one."
Knowles admits she's already thinking about her bridesmaids - she tells the
magazine that her former bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams will
join her at the altar.
While the singer might be seriously considering getting married, she's not
sure she wants kids just yet.
She adds: "I didn't want to be in the delivery room (for Solange's birth).
but I was moved by the experience, so it didn't make me not want to have
kids.
"I babysat for my nephew last week and it's not as glamorous as it looks."

I just want to take the opportunity to say that I saw this movie on
Friday, and I was truly moved. For those wanting to see it:
- the sex is overhyped - there are only two scenes, both very brief,
and one kiss. There's almost as much hetero sex shown.
- It's a lot slower than I would have thought - the first half hour
really drags.
- The end is an emotional "wham." Bring Kleenex.
- Heath Ledger is as deserving of an Oscar as everyone says. His
performance is phenomenal. I hardly recognized him.
- The scenery is spectacular. Try to see it on a big screen.
My husband went with me, and we drove an hour away to see it (it's only
playing at one theatre in Michigan.) I told him I needed to see it,
and he asked if it was part of my "liberal merit badge" requirement for
Girl Scouts ;-)
