Cate rates Brad 'glorious, like chocolate'
May 25, 2006
OSCAR-WINNER Cate Blanchett has likened Brad Pitt to a glorious piece of
chocolate, saying she has wanted to work with the Hollywood hunk for a long
time.
Blanchett made the comments during a two-day break from filming Elizabeth:
The Golden Age in London to attend the world premiere of her new film,
Babel, at the Cannes International Film Festival.
The Australian star, who plays the Hollywood heart-throb's wife in the film,
said: "It's like chocolate - he is glorious and wonderful, and we've been
wanting to work with each other for a long time."
Blanchett had earlier been named to star opposite Pitt in The Fountain,
which was to have been shot in Australia. That project fell through, but the
film has now been made into a feature starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel
Weisz.
Meanwhile, Blanchett and Pitt got another opportunity to work together on
Babel, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu of Mexico, who made 21 Grams
with Naomi Watts in 2003.
"To work together in quite an unexpected way and for Brad to be doing
something for this audience and working with Alejandro, it was an intensely
moving experience," Blanchett said.
Babel, which will be released in Australia later this year, tells three
different stories set in Morocco, Tunisia, Mexico and Japan.
Pitt sent a message to fans at Cannes about the "imminent arrival" of his
new baby.
Holed up in Namibia with his lover, Angelina Jolie, Pitt said the "newest
addition to our family" was due any time now.
Blanchett has only a minor role in Babel, but director Inarritu said no one
could have played it better.
"There are no small parts - it's just what you do with them," the Mexican
filmmaker said.
"Cate is the only one who could have done what she did - because in a role
that was minimal, she gave all because of the way she embodied and crafted
the character."
Blanchett is married to writer Andrew Upton, with whom she has two sons,
Dashiell and Roman.
Roman, her youngest son, suffered minor burns in an accident in Morocco
during the production of Babel, and he was flown to London for treatment.
Blanchett did not comment specifically on the May 2005 incident, but said:
"Being a parent, whenever I see a child in danger - particularly with an
irresponsible nanny running around the desert - it's like pulling the roots
of my system out and spraying them on the ground in front of me.
"It's very distressing. But it was great - my children were there and I have
some incredible photographs of them playing with the children in the
village, which was an astonishing experience for them to have."
Blanchett has a busy schedule ahead of her for the coming year, with three
more films in the works.

Producers of the MICHAEL HUTCHENCE biopic are trying to convince
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN star JOHNNY DEPP to play the late INXS
frontman.
The film is being fast-tracked and most of the production will take
place in the singer's homeland of Australia.
In addition to Depp, film-makers are also looking to cast ERIC BANA,
SIENNA MILLER, NAOMI WATTS and RACHEL GRIFFITHS in the movie.
The film's tentative title is SLIDE AWAY, which refers to the duet
Hutchence sang with U2's BONO, according to website MovieHole.net.
Contrary to press reports that the late singer's family was not happy
about the film, producers say Hutchence's estate is cooperating with
the production.
The movie's director NICK EGAN, who directed some of INXS's most
popular videos, has been working with the singer's brother, RHETT on
the film. (SS/WNWCMVH/ES)

Watts leads charge for dead author
April 03, 2006
SHE tangled with King Kong, now Australian actor Naomi Watts wants to
wrestle with the works of one of Britain's greatest novelists.
Watts, 37, is one of the actors behind a cinematic revival of work by W.
Somerset Maugham, who was reputed to be the world's best paid novelist in
the 1930s.
Halle Berry and Meg Ryan are also combing through his stories in search of
future hits.
Maugham, who died in Nice in 1965, donated his estate to the Royal Literary
Fund, partly to avoid an ugly court battle between his daughter and his gay
lover.
The venerable organisation, set up in 1790 to help "professional published
authors in financial difficulties", will therefore share in the box office
bounty that the filming of his books will generate.
The Maugham revival was set in motion last year when Annette Bening was
nominated for an Oscar for her role in Being Julia, a tale of love and
revenge set in 1930s London theatreland.
That cost half the $100 million budget earmarked for Watts's film, The
Painted Veil, in which an adulterous socialite seeks to atone for her sins
by aiding cholera victims in imperial China.
Ryan has expressed interest in The Letter, a tale of fatal adultery in the
tropics, while Berry is considering Rain, an erotic thriller about a
prostitute stranded in Samoa -- filmed in 1953 with Rita Hayworth.
Watts said after she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in 21 Grams,
the art house hit, that she was seeking "tougher smarter roles sometimes
only found in smarter books".
Adultery is a recurring theme in "Willie" Maugham's novels and plays.
Biographers have suggested that this reflects the bisexual writer's
vacillations between his tempestuous marriage to the daughter of the founder
of Barnardo's homes and a series of ever younger men.

Why Jodie Foster'>Jodie Foster avoids the Oscars
March 27, 2006
While Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Charlize Theron were navigating the red
carpet crowd in high heels at the recent Academy Awards, Jodie Foster'>Jodie Foster was at
home in New York in her pyjamas.
Sitting with Foster on the couch were her two sons, Charles, 7, and
Christopher, 4.
In what has become a tradition for the Foster family, Chinese food is
ordered in and a noisy chanting ritual begins.
Foster, as a member of the Academy and a two-time best actress Oscar winner,
could don the gown and jewellery and attend Hollywood's night of nights each
year, but an evening in with takeaway, her kids and pyjamas is far more
appealing for the 43-year-old, who began acting at the age of three.
"Why not go?" Foster asks. "You have to be kidding.
"Sometimes I go when I'm not involved, but it's a lot better to watch it on
TV."
Besides, the Academy probably would not allow Foster and her kids to make
their noisy chants if they were sitting front row in the Kodak Theatre.
"In the early part of the show I always get my kids to chant the actor whom
I want to win," Foster, who is usually guarded about her home life, said.
"My sons don't see any movies so they don't care who wins.
"So they were like 'Rachel Weisz, Rachel Weisz'."
The chanting helped because Weisz did win the best supporting actress Oscar
for The Constant Gardener.
Foster would not reveal her other picks, giving a sarcastic "no comment",
but believes her good friend, Russell Crowe, deserved at least a nomination
for his performance in Cinderella Man.
Foster rated Crowe's snubbed portrayal of heavyweight 1930s boxer James
Braddock as better than his Oscar win for Gladiator in 2001 and his
nominated roles for The Insider (2000) and A Beautiful Mind (2002).
"Russell, I think, it was a better performance than what he has ever given,"
said Foster, who won her Oscars for The Accused (1989) and The Silence of
the Lambs (1992).
Foster may not be able to stay home for next year's Academy Awards ceremony
as she could be nominated for a startling performance in the new Spike Lee
directed action thriller, Inside Man.
Foster's Inside Man co-stars are Denzel Washington and Clive Owen and she
appears in probably fewer than 10 scenes, but The Los Angeles Times in its
recent review dubbed her performance as "picture stealing" and her character
as "the ultimate ice-princess power broker in a city of power brokers".
Inside Man is set in New York and Foster plays Madeline White, a mysterious
designer suit-wearing troubleshooter.
The billionaire owner of a Wall Street bank, played by Christopher Plummer,
hires her when a gang of bandits, led by Owen's character, takes over the
bank and holds 50 employees and customers hostage.
The bank's owner has a secret hidden in the bank's safe and wants it kept
that way and White coolly weaves her way into the drama, making deals with
the NYPD negotiator (Washington) and the bank robbers.
"I liked the idea she was somebody who held equal weight and power with
these other two men who are inhabiting this very masculine, powerful world,"
Foster said.
"They have guns, masks and beards, but she holds equal weight to them
without ever raising her voice, always saying please and thank you and with
a breezy, detached, amused quality because she's been through this before.
"She's been through it 20 times, but the two guys have only done it once."
Troubleshooters such as Madeline White exist, especially in Hollywood and
Washington, DC, she says.
"They clean up dirty laundry," Foster said.
"You call them to deal with a scandal.
"In Washington, the world of politics, we know there are people like this,
although, I don't know anyone who dresses like that.
"I love that she lives on Madison Avenue, she goes to the Hamptons on the
weekend, gets her hair bleached, fake tan, has the shoes and has her own
richly independent identity in this world of very macho guys."
Foster fans can expect to see plenty more of the actress in coming years
after she worked only sparingly while raising Charles and Christopher.
"My kids are at the age now where they are both in school," Foster, who
reportedly has been in a long-term relationship with producer Cydney
Bernard, explained.
Foster will soon begin shooting The Brave One, co-starring Terrence Howard,
in which she will play a woman seeking revenge from a brutal attack.
In 2007 she will direct and star alongside Robert De Niro in the legal
drama, Sugarland.
It will be a busy two years, but Foster says her kids remain her No. 1
priority.
"If I get to 7pm or 8pm and the director says 'wrap', I'm gone. I'm straight
home," she said.

NY DAILY NEWS...RUSH AND MOLLOY
Are Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts coming unglued?
The two stepped out publicly as recently as March 2, when they attended
"Hedda Gabler" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. But they're said to be
confiding to friends that they've hit a rough patch.
"He's been telling people he's having 'girlfriend trouble,'" a source
tells us. "She's been telling people to keep an eye out for new
boyfriends."
Watts has been seeing Schrieber since last spring. They got to know
each other while shooting "The Painted Veil," based on a W. Somerset
Maugham story, in which Watts portrays a restless married woman who
takes up with a playboy, played by Schreiber.
It was easy to see how a woman could fall under his spell. The Tony
Award-winner, who'd been linked with Kristin Davis and producer Kate
Driver, is 6-foot-3 and darn good-looking. Friends of Naomi also liked
the fact that, at 39, he's a year older than she is - as opposed to
her previous boyfriend, Heath Ledger, who is 11 years younger than
Watts.
Watts and Schreiber didn't have their first official outing as a couple
until September, at the premiere of "Everything Is Illuminated,"
Schreiber's directorial debut. By December, papers in Watts' homeland,
Australia, were claiming they were seeing a fertility specialist.
But lately, Watts is said to have confided that she's finding him a tad
too controlling.
Even though "King Kong" put her on Hollywood's A-list, "He wants her to
stop working entirely and have a baby," claims a source. "He wants to
review all her offers. He even likes her to look a certain way."
Watts' rep swears, "Everything is fine. This is total nonsense."
Schreiber, who stars this summer as Macbeth in Shakespeare in the Park,
insists he's no one to meddle.
"If anything," he laughs, "I'm grateful if Naomi gives me advice.
Especially when it comes to dressing. She's a lot more experienced with
what to wear."

New York last night for the debut of Hedda Gabler, the Sydney Theatre
Company production starring Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving.
The 850-strong Brooklyn audience gave the performance a standing ovation and
afterwards the King Kong star paid her respects, hugging Blanchett at a
post-play party.
Watts, who turned up with boyfriend Liev Schreiber despite his reported
fling with Winona Ryder, told her friend that listening to so many
Australian accents made her nostalgic for home.
Sadly, the debut was marked by interruptions from ringing mobile phones at
crucial moments, which particularly annoyed Martin Scorcese, who scowled at
one phone's owner.
Scorcese was among an A-list crowd heaping praise on the STC production,
saying it was "extraordinary, really beautifully put together".
Those wowed by Blanchett's performance included Marisa Tomei, John Turturro
and Jonathan Rhys Meyers while Australian Ambassador to the US Dennis
Richardson and New York Consul-General Ken Allen were also in the crowd.

Kong Girl Snubs Bond
King Kong actress Naomi Watts has been tipped as favourite to be 007's next
leading lady.
But according to The Sun, insiders claim she will turn down the chance to
star alongside new James Bond actor Daniel Craig.
The word is that she fears the "Curse of the Bond Girl" could thwart her
career...
Halle Berry played Jinx in 2002's Die Another Day, but consequent films like
Catwoman haven't bought her the success of her pre-Bond Oscar-winning glory.
Teri Hatcher also cosied-up to Bond for Tomorrow Never Dies, but until
Desperate Housewives came along, the roles weren't forthcoming.
Other former Bond Babes like Britt Eckland, Barbara Bach and Ursula Andress
also saw their careers flounder after shaking the famous spy's Martini.
We will have to wait and see who will join Daniel on set for the filming of
Bond's latest adventure.
The Casino Royale remake is due to be released in November 2006.
Who'd have thought James Bond would be struggling to find a date?

Naomi Watts Seeing Fertility Doc?
Reuters / Weta Digital Ltd.
Hollywood couple Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber are at the center of
pregnancy rumors after she was spotted visiting a fertility specialist in
Australia.
The actress, 37, and actor, 38, have been dating since April and are
currently visiting Watts' family in Sydney.
During her current stay in Sydney, Watts was seen visiting Chinese herbalist
and fertility expert Lily Liu, according to the Sydney Morning Herald
newspaper.
Watts recently admitted she was desperate for children, but was worried it
might be too late to conceive.
She said, "I wish it could have happened a little bit sooner. I have wanted
a family since I was 19 -- certainly to have children."

Watts and Schreiber to Wed?
"King Kong" beauty Naomi Watts is reportedly set to wed her beau Liev
Schreiber.
The couple have enjoyed a low-key relationship, with British-born Watts only
recently breaking her silence on the romance.
And while representatives for the screen stars have yet to comment, pals say
Schreiber has already proposed.
A source says, "Naomi not only said yes, but she wants to get married as
soon, and as secretly, as possible.
"Liev doesn't want to waste any time. He is absolutely thrilled Naomi is
going to marry him. He says it's something he's been wishing for almost
since their first date. And he's already told her that he wants to have lots
of babies. Right away!"

Skinny Naomi Watts Concerned Fay Wray
December 20, 2005, 6:40:20
FAY WRAY CONCERNED ABOUT 'SKINNY' NAOMI WATTS
Late actress FAY WRAY was unsure about NAOMI WATTS taking on her character
in the new movie remake of KING KONG - because she found her "a little too
skinny".
Wray, who passed away last year (04), starred in the original 1933 giant ape
movie as heroine ANN DARROW, and met briefly with Watts before filming began
on the new PETER JACKSON version.
But Wray's daughter VICTORIA RISKIN admits her mother was concerned about
the star's weight.
She says, "They had dinner together with Peter and his wife. My mother told
me she thought Naomi was a lovely person... though maybe too skinny. She
thought that would be all right."
And Riskin was thrilled by the way director Jackson approached the project.
She adds, "I've seen the original probably a dozen times. There was a little
moment where Naomi read her lines when they're getting on the ship, and the
lines were exactly as they were in the first film.
"Overall, I think Naomi's performance had the same intelligence, charm and
pluck that my mother had."

Naomi is great but she has delivered the same performance she gave in
MD in 21Grams and WDLHA and even The Ring, don't even get me started on
Ring 2 when she can do more than be angsty onscreen then give me a
call, if she can actually summon the emotional intensity, the
variations in emotional accomodation and subtlety of Kidman especially
the subtlety in Birth, Dogville, EWS, Portrait of a Lady, The Others
and even The Interpreter then I'll say she comes up to Kidman's knees
before then she merely rates a great rating from me. It is always like
someone is screaming at her "act, Naomi, come on ACT, people are
watching", all the veins in her neck are always standing, she is always
ACTING, she doesn't have a subtle bone in her body. I'll take half of
Kidman than 2 of her any day. Apart from MD, her performances have
never gotten under my skin unlike Kidman, I watch a performance of hers
and I start thinking, that is great acting.

In its darkness, 'Kong' shows the human heart
Dec 15, 2005
Is "King Kong" racist?
Lots of people say it is. And, if it is, why does the film keep getting
remade? What does it say about us if the new "Kong" is a huge hit?
Any movie that features white people sailing off to the Third World to
capture a giant ape and carry it back to the West for exploitation is
going to be seen as a metaphor for colonialism and racism. That was
true for the original in 1933 and for the two remakes: the campy one in
1976, and the latest, directed by Peter Jackson. (In addition, a "Kong"
wannabe, "Mighty Joe Young," has been made twice.)
Movie reviewer David Edelstein, writing in Slate.com, notes the
"implicit racism of 'King Kong' - the implication that Kong stands for
the black man brought in chains from a dark island (full of murderous
primitive pagans) and with a penchant for skinny white blondes."
Indeed, a Google search using the words "King Kong racism" yielded
490,000 hits.
Comparing the new film with the original, The Washington Post's Stephen
Hunter observed, "It remains a parable of exploitation, cultural
self-importance, the arrogance of the West, all issues that were
obvious in the original but unexamined; they remain unexamined here, if
more vivid."
And by more vivid, Hunter might be referring to the natives of mythical
Skull Island, where Kong is discovered. Director Jackson took people of
Melanesian stock - the dark-skinned peoples who are indigenous to much
of the South Pacific, including Jackson's own country of New Zealand -
and made them up to look and act like monsters, more zombie-ish than
human. Indeed, one is moved to compare these human devils to the
ogre-ish Orcs from Jackson's mega-Oscar "Lord of the Rings" films. The
bad guys are dark, hideous and undifferentiatedly evil.
One might note that the original source material for both films dates
from the same period: "Kong" in '33, J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" four
years later. Both works are ultimately meditations on the West and
Western uniqueness. Which is to say, what's the role for white Europe -
and for its ethnic offshoot, North America - in a world that is mostly
non-white?
Some would label such sentiments as racist, but others would note that
every ethnicity naturally feels a special affection for its own kind.
Yet, in the West, outright invocations of white nationalism, such as
the 1915 film "Birth of a Nation," were politically unacceptable, even
in the '30s, and so the same race-conscious sentiments were encrypted
into allegory - in print or on celluloid.
The new "Kong" drills home its race consciousness by making repeated
references to Joseph Conrad's 1899 novel, "Heart of Darkness," which
denigrates both the colonizing whites and colonized blacks. In the
novel's climax, the once-idealistic character Kurtz writes of Africans,
"Exterminate all the brutes!" Conrad presents Kurtz as crazy, but
Africa is presented as a crazy-making place.
The new Kong is, as always, a noble beast with a tender side. But, at
the same time, his killing is presented as a cruel necessity. And at
the end of the film, the white people - love interests Naomi Watts and
Adrien Brody - are brought closer together, thanks to their brush with
the big ape.
But if the movie is so loaded with race-charged imagery, why isn't it
being protested? Why aren't we seeing pickets and boycotts? Perhaps
it's because today, as people look around the world, they see that most
political strife is, in fact, ethnic strife. Folks like to say that
"diversity is our strength," and they resolve to fight racism, but
every day's news reminds us that ethnic conflict lurks in the human
heart.
That's a gloomy reality that "Kong" captures, in its crypto fashion,
and so there's no point in getting worked up over it. Indeed, since the
film is entertaining - like the similarly themed, much honored and
extremely popular "Rings" movies of a few years back - one might as
well go see this one, too.
